A student's resume - its basic contents

It is typically a good idea to begin to develop a resume, that can be used in a variety of ways. You can give the resume to your teachers, who will work on your recommendations.  That will help them to get to know you more broadly, as opposed to just their experiences with you in their class. You might even  submit the resume as part of your college applications , if the resume adds important details about your activities which you don’t feel are adequately described in your application forms and essays.

The resume can take different forms depending on its use. For example, a sport-oriented resume featuring academic details (test scores, advanced courses taken, GPA, etc.) as well as a focus on a particular sport can be useful to give to coaches, who might be interested in recruiting you. A resume without the academic piece, which would be covered elsewhere in your applications, but with a lengthier focus on one or more activity themes (community service, leadership, music, etc.) could be a helpful component of your applications. We often encourage students to add several sentences of narrative detail to their resumes where they describe what they have done and learned through their various activities.

Degrassi Goes To Hollywood (Short Review)

Watched the two hour special on CTV.

Not sure what to make of it?

They could have made it into four episodes.

I find it too cliche and too American.

At least the actress playing Manny and Paige being their “swan song” for Degrassi.

I am still with the 1980s old school realism version of the series.

Wasn’t controversial as School’s Out where Snake and Caitlin dropped the f-bomb and alot of sex.

Probably The N which broadcast the show in America was afraid that it would make an bad example for the “kiddies”.

The music was abit cheesy.

Great for a Degrassi hook.

What is Alberta doing? - Bill 44 Update.

Well, Bill 44 has been passed into law.

What is Bill 44?  Bill 44 is the ‘parental rights’ legislation that stipulates that parents have the right to pull their children out of so contentious classroom situations.  Topics such as Human Sexuality, Religion and Evolution have been mentioned as possible situations.

Bill 44 or “The Right to Remain Ignorant” bill has been postponed in its implementation.  The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) reports that the culture minister Lindsay Blackett has delayed the legislation for some more fine tuning to allow the schools to as he puts it:  “Our intention is certainly not to get school boards before the Human Rights Commission.”

Intentionally or not this legislation allows teachers to be brought before a HRC tribunal when discussion such controversial topics such as evolution and sexual education are included in a lesson without parental approval.

This is a gross neglect of public education in Alberta.  I’ve already written about Bill 44 here when this particular travesty of Bill came out.  I am hoping that the Alberta Government have realized the magnitude of the stupid (stupid burning so bright that it made it a mark on PZ Myers’s blog Pharyngula) that is in this bill and working to neuter it as quickly as possible.

Given the lovely conservative nature of the politics in this province, I highly doubt any significant revisions will be made.

West Edmonton Mall?

Grand Villa Casino

The Grand Villa Casino opened up sometime last year and we were all in awe. I wasn’t there for the opening but we started going in December and it was fun fun fun. At one point, my friend A and I used to frequent it every night. A place where you can go hang out at 4 in the morning that isn’t a Superstore Parking Lot? Score! Although I’m not dissing parking lots, they’re tons of fun when you’re in high school and you think Miley Cyrus is cool- we were 20 and even though we thought Miley Cyrus was cool, we knew the LG days were over.

So here comes Grand Villa. A seemingly classier place than any other casino we’d been to- namely the Great Canadian.

What can I say? It’s just so pretty-looking. Nothing compared to Vegas- of course but it can hold its own in this city.

After parking across the street, you’ll walk into a huge lobby coated in marble and purple drapes. You know instantly that you’re in a happy place (and not just because the doorman ID’d you… ok, maybe a little) well, as happy a place where you lose all your money can get. The man interior room features the circular bar and a large step fountain. Trust me, it’s a good stuff.

From my experience, the staff was courteous. The service was great. Bartenders were great. Fastfood servers were great. Prices for drinks and meals were fairly cheap too. If you check out their promotions, you’ll find some good deals too.

Not sure about the dining and hotel bit as I’ve never experienced it- but I’d have to give the casino an A. The vibe was good and it’s pretty much as good as it gets in Burnaby. I’m glad someone had the good sense to bring a classy establishment to that part of town.

Mira Nair's Monsoon Wedding

Director Mira Nair’s Monsoon Wedding showed the beautiful and stunning imagery mind. In Monsoon Wedding her artists were wrapped with marigold wedding archs, and richly colored, elegant silk fabrics, chaotic and polluted streets of Delhi, India.

The main attraction throughout the movie is of the brilliant colors and textures of the Indian culture that the director has brought to the screen. The film casts Naseeruddin Shah, Lillete Dubey, Shefali Shetty, Vijay Raaz, Tilotama Shome, Vasundhara Das, Parvin Dabas, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Kamini Khanna, Rajat Kapoor, Neha Dubey, Kemaya Kidwai, Ishaan Nair, Randeep Hooda and Roshan Seth.

The film was also 2002 nominated with the Golden Globe Best Foreign Language Film. India in 2002. In the same year the film won the Toronto International Film Festival: People’s Choice Award, third place.

Monsoon Wedding is a must see movie, if not for the exciting visuals and songs, then atleast for the artistic style.
